15,000 hours of playtesting informed every page of the Cellosophy curriculum. The music isn't cobbled together for toddlers from archaic folk songs they will no longer recognize. It is selected from real compositions by the greatest minds in an art form that is still evolving. It ranges from Hildegard von Bingen to works commissioned specifically for this method to address the challenges the next generation of cellists will actually face.
Cellosophy doesn't use a factory-style classroom approach. It encourages exploration and fluency through breadth of repertoire and genres. Creativity through guided improvisation and composition. Precision through rigorous sequential scaffolding. Designed by a specialist in contemporary cello repertoire, for students ages 9 and up, including adults.

Cellosophy is an online cello education platform created by Eric Moore. It includes a 15-volume cello method called Cellosophy that comes with video guides for every piece. It also includes four Courses on how to practice the cello, sheet music, free practice tools, and a cello teacher directory.
Eric Moore is a cellist, educator, and the creator of the Cellosophy Method. He co-edited the Aaron-Moore Popper Etudes edition (required at Juilliard and the University of Michigan since 2012), holds three degrees from the University of Michigan (summa cum laude). He has performed hundreds of recitals and has logged over 15,000 hours of private teaching.
Four Courses on how to practice the cello: the free 7-Day Practice Primer, the $99 30-Day Practice Challenge, the $499 Practical Popper Prep (6 months), and the $4,299 Proper Popper Practice Project (1 year, all 40 Popper Etudes). Payments on a lower Course roll up as credit toward the next. There is also a comprehensive video course that accompanies the cello method, Cellosophy.
Yes. The 7-Day Practice Primer is completely free: no credit card required. You get daily emails and short video lessons for 7 days, about 10 minutes a day.
A 15-volume cello curriculum. The first three volumes alone span 35 composers across 9 centuries, from Hildegard von Bingen to commissioned contemporary works. It is backwards-designed from the Saint-Saens Concerto, includes 1,400+ theory problems in Volume 1 alone, and integrates composition, improvisation, and lead sheet training from the very beginning.
The 7-Day Primer and 30-Day Challenge work for any level, from complete beginners to professionals. The Practical Popper Prep targets intermediate players, and the Proper Popper Practice Project requires experience with at least 2 concertos and fluency in 4 octaves, and has been taken by many professional cellists from all over the world. The Cellosophy Method is a standalone method that takes absolute beginners to the highest professional levels.
Cellosophy uses real compositions (not simplified folk tunes), integrates sight-reading, composition, and improvisation at the beginning levels, and includes a video guide for every piece. The repertoire features women composers throughout and contemporary works spanning well beyond 1950. Suzuki was written before Elvis, and we think cellists deserve music that reflects the world they actually live in. The method also includes pieces commissioned specifically for it, all designed to equip the next generation of cellists. The video guides mean students learn faster and teachers spend more time making music and less time making corrections.
The Four Cello Practice Courses work with or without a teacher. For the Cellosophy Method volumes, we recommend working with a certified Cellosophy teacher, though self-study is supported. Working with a certified Cellosophy teacher will also save you up to 50% on your subscription. You can find a teacher in our free directory.
Yes. The method was explicitly designed and tested with adults in mind (no Twinkle Twinkle here). You'll get breadth and depth that is lacking in other cello methods so that from the very beginning you get exposure to some of the greatest music ever written. The Cellosophy Method is hands-down the best way for adults to learn cello and has been used by countless working adults and retired adults, many of whom had no musical experience before starting.
Yes. Teacher certification is free (compare that to $800+ for Suzuki certification). It's not just a certification: it's a full course on how to teach the cello, accompanying every volume of the method. Certified teachers get a listing in our searchable directory, access to curriculum materials, a share of video course revenue from their students, and a private teacher forum that includes resources for creating and building a studio, running your business, current best practices, and templates for student contracts, recital programs, and much more.
A cello metronome, cello tuner and drone generator, a Practice Scorecard quiz (15 questions, 3 minutes, personalized PDF results), and a cello personality quiz.
Practice Courses: The 7-Day Primer is free. The 30-Day Practice Challenge is $99 one-time with lifetime access. The Practical Popper Prep is $499 for 6 months. The Proper Popper Practice Project is $4,299 for 1 year. Payments from a lower Course apply as credit to the next. The Cellosophy Method video course is $1,299/year or $129/month for self-study, $899/year or $89/month with a teacher, and $699/year or $69/month with a Cellosophy Certified Teacher.
